Adding paneling to a room or bathroom can be a great way to add texture, depth, and visual interest to the space. It can also be a relatively easy and cost-effective way to update the look of a room. In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the process of adding paneling to your walls, including the materials you will need, the tools required, and the steps to take to ensure a successful installation.

Whether you are a seasoned DIY-er or a novice looking to tackle a new project, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to get started. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

    Materials:

    6″ Flat Baseboard
    1″ Flat Trim
    Mounting Tape
    Brad Nail Gun
    Compressor
    Brad Nails
    Wood Filler
    Putty knife
    Caulk

    Caulk Gun
    Orbital Sander
    Sand Paper
    Grouting Sponge
    Paint Brush
    Primer
    Paint
    Power Drill
    Hardware

    Step 1

    Determine Placement

Use a level to draw a line where you want the bottom of your board to go. I like to then tape out where the studs are to make sure I get the wood as secure as possible.

    Step 2

    Install the Top

Nail the top rail into the wall followed by the top cap. I like to use self adhesive to hold up the top rail while I nail it in. This allows me to work alone and reposition if necessary.

    Step 3

    Install the Stiles

With the top rail level, space out where you want your stiles. Next, measure and cut each stile. Keep in mind that your wall and floor may not be level. Mine differed by as much a 1/4 inch!

    Step 4

    Fill Gaps & Holes

Fill nail holes and large gaps with wood filler and caulk along all the seams. I use a grouting sponge to knock down excess and create a smooth line.

    Step 5

    Sand (a Lot)

Sand down the surface using an orbital sander until smooth and the stiles are flush with the top and bottom cap. You may need to refill gaps and sand again a few times.

    Step 6

    Prep for Paint

Wipe down the surface to remove any lingering sand and tape off the area to be painted. As an extra precaution I also like to tape off the floor. You can use paint thinner to remove and drops.

    Step 7

    Prime & Paint

‘Naked’ wood will slurp up paint. Use a wood primer first for the best finish, followed by a high quality enamel. Since this is a bathroom we opted for a semi-gloss enamel for easy cleaning.

    Step 8

    Mark Hardware

I like to use painters tape before I predrill anything. This allows me to visualize placement as change my mind more easily. Blue tape is also great to prevent wood splitting.

    Step 9

    Install Hardware

With holes drilled it’s time to add hardware! We opted for a Beachwood knob that pulls in our wood accents. Voila! You’ve now added both form and function to your space!

In conclusion, adding paneling to a wall is a great way to enhance the look and feel of any room in your home. With the right tools and materials, this DIY project can be completed in just a few simple steps.
